The average knowledge worker's day is now interrupted by a steady stream of notifications, messages, and context switches. Against that backdrop, the ability to sustain long, uninterrupted stretches of focused work — sometimes called deep work — has become both rarer and more valuable.

Why switching costs more than it seems

Each time attention shifts from one task to another, there's a measurable cost in the time it takes to fully re-engage with the original task — often referred to as attention residue. A brief two-minute interruption can end up costing far more than two minutes once refocusing time is factored in.

Practical ways to protect focus time

  • Batch shallow work — check messages and email at set intervals rather than continuously.
  • Block dedicated time — treat focus sessions as fixed appointments, not something to fit in if time allows.
  • Reduce ambient interruption — silence non-urgent notifications during focus blocks rather than trying to ignore them through willpower.
  • Communicate expectations — let colleagues know when you're heads-down, so slower response times don't create anxiety on either side.

Start with 25–45 minutes

Long, multi-hour deep work sessions are hard to sustain right away. Starting with shorter, well-protected blocks and gradually extending them tends to work better than attempting several uninterrupted hours immediately.

It's a skill, not just a schedule

Protecting time on a calendar is necessary but not sufficient — sustained focus is also a trained capacity that tends to erode with constant task-switching and rebuild with deliberate practice, similar to physical endurance.
